Of course, this is the beginning of a new year, 2014 but it is also the beginning of a new gardening year! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Last weekend marked the beginning of the gardening year for many of us. The ANLD/APLD winter conference on drainage and HPSO winter program featuring Rick Darke provided the opportunity to see friends, many for the first time since the Fall, talk plants, 'Did your Astelia die in the freeze'?...'What does your garden look like'? 'What will you try this year'? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
and learn from a plantsman about his process of making and being in a garden for 25 years.</div>

Everyone seemed full of energy and excitement about what this new gardening year will bring.</div>

HAPPY NEW (GARDENING) YEAR TO YOU ALL!!</div>

''I am 'in love' with this garden!' 'This is the kind of garden Mickey and I would love to have!' I proclaimed to my friend. Surprised by my proclamation, my friend asked 'why'? Not because she didn't agree, but because it didn't fit my design/gardening style.<br />
<br />
I firmly believe that we <i>are</i> different in different environments. Our tastes change, our attitudes and our behaviors. Which is precisely why I love touring gardens. I love seeing how different garden owners live, use plants, emphasize areas and create a 'sense of place'. I enjoy <i>feeling </i>differently in different places - its instructive.<br />
<br />
These photos are of the garden that struck my heart. It is seamlessly connected to its place which everyone who visits can feel.<br />

Last week I sprayed out my first 'stab' at some raised planters I designed for a client. The planters are large, abstracted fleur-de-lis shapes to be made of steel. The two 18" tall planters loosely mimic the curved stone walls built, years ago, by Pete Wilson. We'll include topiary, a variety of foliage color and texture to further connect the entire entry from street to doorway. Other goals for this front garden include: adding overall structure with plants, building brick platforms for large pots at the top of the stairs and emphasizing the extraordinary maple and architecture of this historic home.</div>

The warmer and drier weather has lured me into the garden more frequently to observe and experience more of everything. The other day, I took my reclining lounge chair onto the gravel terrace beneath the apple tree. I gazed up into the sky, noticing the spring-shade- of-green leaves against the blue sky, the striated clouds wisps and thought, why does this feel different? Normally it is too cool and rainy this time of year to lay in a chair and stare at the sky.<br />
<br />
...I do feel jinx-like discomfort as I make these statements...<br />
<br />
But, I must continue... You see later in the season, when it is warmer and drier, the apple tree is full of apples and sitting under it is like standing in front of a tennis ball canon! So this feels like special event, to enjoy the garden in April!<br />
<br />
I've enjoyed the early spring scents of lilac and the continued un-furling of the ferns, Epimendium blooms and new growth on everything! This year I bravely chopped the Hoboellia angustifolia var. angustifolia back to it trellis. It had grown 2 feet above its trellis and into my neighbors trees on the other side of the fence. Fresh, new foliage is now (yeah!) emerging from the tan, woody stems and I know it will cover its trellis in no time!<br />
<br />
Some spring sightings...<br />

You know just how difficult it is to find clothes made in the USA...well, fortunately, <a href="http://www.handeyesupply.com/">Hand Eye Supply</a> here in Portland carries cool USA made work clothes and tools. This spring they begin offering some garden related items and I was asked to wear some of them while working in my garden. They also shot their Spring Quarterly in my garden using a neat technique called cinemagraphs. The photographer, <a href="http://www.happyplayground.com/498584/">Christine Taylor</a>, shot both still and video images and, somehow, pasted them together to create the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinemagraph">cinemagraphs</a> which you can see here <a href="http://www.handeyesupply.com/pages/quarterly">http://www.handeyesupply.com/pages/quarterly</a>Laurenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13959779241904037305noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1946650409575235634.post-57492366173750243482013-02-13T16:55:00.000-08:002013-02-13T16:56:07.143-08:00Hamamelis 'Aphrodite'Hamamelis 'Aphrodite' is a fairly new addition to my garden. I inherited her from a dear friend who moved to a new garden. She has been in the ground for one and one half years and this year is her's. 'Aphrodite' is gorgeous! She glows as though she moves. She smells of cardamom, cinnamon and lemon. She is deep red, to orange to yellow. She holds a prominent position in the garden and deserves it!<br />

<br />
Hardscape is the solid material
underfoot, and the architecture overhead that creates the framework and the
structure of a garden. It includes garden paths, patios, arbors and pergolas.
It dictates how we move through and react to a space and establishes an
architectural relationship between the home and its garden. This structural
framework also contains and organizes the plants in a garden. A well-designed
hardscape can bring an overall sense of order and calm to a garden year-round.
Practical, beautiful, well-built hardscapes and structural plantings can both
unify plant collections and permit favorite plants to be accentuated.<br />

<div class="Body">

<div class="Body">
I am a professional garden
designer so I study gardens wherever I go. When I tour a garden, always running
through my mind, are questions such as: What is the relationship between the
hardscape and the architecture of the home?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>How is this relationship established? Is the form of the
hardscape linked to architectural details of the house? How? Are similar
materials used both inside and outside the house? Are there visual cues that
lead me through the garden which dictate a certain pace or rhythm? How do I feel
in this garden? Why?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="Body">
<br /></div>
<div class="Body">
When I move from experiencing
gardens to designing them, I ask similar questions that reveal the uniqueness
of each garden and its owner. I am interested in who you are and how you want
to feel in your garden. Are there particular spaces, gardens, artwork or music
that inspires you? What are your favorite hardscape materials? What are your
favorite plants? What is your site like? Is there great elevation change? Where
are the best views? What do you want to emphasize and de-emphasize about your
site? What is the architectural style of your home? Are there pre-existing or
natural locations for seating and other functional areas? What is your budget
for the entire project? <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="Body">
<br /></div>
<div class="Body">
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> One of my goals in designing
gardens is to integrate the home and garden architecturally. The hardscape
should relate to the home in some way. Materials, patterns of materials and the
scale and style of the home can be repeated in the garden. For instance, the
hardscape that leads to the front door can be paved in a similar stone and
pattern to relate to the flooring in the foyer. Dimensions of porches, windows
and stairs, when repeated in the landscape, create a relationship of scale and
proportion. Hardscape can carry the eye from a picture window into the garden
to rest on a focal point such as a piece of artwork, a water feature, or a
specimen tree or shrub, further integrating the garden with the home.</div>
<div class="Body">
<br /></div>
<div class="Body">
Additionally, it is essential to
integrate the garden with your lifestyle. I design gardens for both gardeners
and non-gardeners and, while I work quite differently with each, they generally
request similar results. Gardeners request cohesion, structure and relief from
the chaos of a collected plant palette. Non-gardeners ask for cohesion,
specific use areas and a general plant style or theme. Nearly all clients of
both kinds request low- or lower-maintenance gardens. Hardscape can address all
of these issues, providing visual and structural cohesion while also adding low
maintenance/high use areas to expand and extend garden use<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="Body">
<br /></div>
<div class="Body">
While a professional garden
designer brings valuable objectivity, perspective and experience to the
process, there are ways to bring a new perspective to your garden on your own.
Study your garden. Try to see the whole picture rather than focusing on the
details. Identify beautiful views or aspects and areas of your garden you’d
like to use more or less. Think about how you use your garden now and how you
would like to use it differently. Take note of your favorite plants or
collections of plants. Think about incorporating some structural plants, those
with strong and interesting shapes, to bring the architecture of your home into
the garden. Placing special collections of plants close to pathways elevates
their impact. Planting structural plants around and amongst your plant
collections provides contrast in form and a sense of order or framework for
your collections. Repetition of these structural plants creates rhythm and adds
cohesion to what may otherwise be a disparate group of plants.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="Body">
<br /></div>
<div class="Body">
Some of my favorite evergreen
structural plants for small to mid-size gardens include: <o:p></o:p></div>

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> To determine the size and form of
the use areas of your hardscape ask yourself: Do you want to cook and/or dine
outdoors? How many people do you tend to entertain? Consider patios for
different uses. If possible, the dining patio should be easily accessible from
the kitchen. A space for relaxing by a fire could be adjacent to the dining
patio. To create different feelings or moods in spaces consider changing the
hardscape materials underfoot. A mortar-set stone patio feels more formal and
is more level for tables and chairs. Sand-set paving (natural stone or man-made
pavers) in a “squares and rectangles” pattern is a close second in formality
and evenness of surface. I refer to a “breakaway” as a point in the garden
where the feeling or mood changes, in some cases from formal to casual. For
instance, a dining patio in mortar-set bluestone could “breakaway” to bluestone
pavers set in a loose rock pathway.</div>

To continue your education of
hardscape design, visit as many gardens, plazas, museums, stone yards and
building centers as you can. Look at the entire space and then the details that
make up the space. Identify what you like and why. Buy samples of materials and
bring them home to your garden. Look at them wet and dry. However, try to limit
the number of materials you introduce into your garden. They should relate to
one another and not overpower the rest of the garden. Hardscape and plantings
should feel balanced. Exceptional gardens are those that fit the context of the
existing architecture and site, function effortlessly, possess a unique
atmosphere that impacts us emotionally and are capable of making our lives more
fulfilling.</div>

<a href="http://www.risaboyer.com/">Risa Boyer Architecture</a> brought me in to design a living wall for an interior office space which she had recently designed. I'd read about the new <span id="goog_1310923966"></span><a href="http://www.woollypocket.com/living-walls?gclid=CPHtgInmrrQCFYl7Qgodg3EALg">Woolly Pocket Living Planter</a><span id="goog_1310923967"></span> made of rigid, recycled plastic and thought it would work well for this application. We installed 15 white Woolly Pockets to white painted plywood attached to the wall. Using white on white would emphasize the minimalism of the space and emphasize the texture and color of the plants. The texture and color of the plants will pick up the ultra-cool rainbow-striped <a href="http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://images.flor.com/catalog/product/Heros/21-1305-01-5.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.flor.com/spring-12&usg=__W0gp5cMci06nN0npeoLtQ6ApluE=&h=1398&w=1398&sz=685&hl=en&start=1&sig2=yZyv7cxLRgpJTfIdQWz1Bg&zoom=1&tbnid=sHJMP8__S4B5MM:&tbnh=140&tbnw=140&ei=pYfTUNG1NcKbjAKh5IGYAw&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dflor%2Bstripes%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DX%26tbo%3Dd%26biw%3D1249%26bih%3D601%26tbs%3Dsimg:CAQSYxphCxCo1NgEGgAMCxCwjKcIGjwKOggBEhT0AvUC_1QL0AfUB3QL8AvMCrwHeARogddU-MXelsvXIqKT79-qNm7SUm3ebQMp214hdaEaoa18MCxCOrv4IGgoKCAgBEgSKiAYFDA,isz:l%26tbm%3Disch&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=4&vpy=146&dur=44&hovh=225&hovw=225&tx=96&ty=119&sig=105855508225504304421&page=1&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0,i:65">FLOR</a> rug. While I have not seen them in person, they look fantastic! They are made of cedar with Polycarbonate lids that feature temperature sensitive hinges which automatically open the lid as temps rise. For more information, call 503-684-3980 or visit their Tigard demonstration garden to see them in person. Sounds like a great holiday gift!<br />

Out on a walk and without thinking, I stop to take photos of the changing of the guards; green-to-yellow-to-red-to-orange and finally absence.<br />

I like to create textural impact by planting two similar forms on either side of a dissimilar form. For example, in the photo below, two columnar Italian Cypresses accentuate the banana between them. The two Cypresses form a frame. Our eyes are pulled into the field the frame - toward the banana. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8QkJ338tK_CddO-WXr1ZhagpcAHTh35zeTy_arniCSjUKbiCn7JUjR5fe7SPiyJm5Gn-yf0KaskGEMMvrr3tVq1L3c4FW0D9cD5CFiXdlqTfDZC8iiMkxyJhojhabCvyS8jaMAESyNNU/s1600/_DSC0128.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8QkJ338tK_CddO-WXr1ZhagpcAHTh35zeTy_arniCSjUKbiCn7JUjR5fe7SPiyJm5Gn-yf0KaskGEMMvrr3tVq1L3c4FW0D9cD5CFiXdlqTfDZC8iiMkxyJhojhabCvyS8jaMAESyNNU/s640/_DSC0128.jpg" width="428" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The plants we use to 'bracket' do not have to form such a literal frame - they don't have to be columnar in form. In the photo below, I've used mounded evergreen forms (Pieris 'Cavatine' in the foreground and Pittosporum 'Wheeler's Dwarf' in the background) to contrast the airy, light, texture of the Corokia and strappy Ophiopogon.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEim0hFIy1S7Qkb2OtL9WLecNIH71DfTXsbie_A7Y-5l4nlMMS9m9HYO3danSnqVqslhma7jm6qzVMn4AUPCFdHilvh1JPn3vhpRLgMuqWSeu2R93_8cm6AagyH1c2A8lyHLxqmAstmX2yk/s1600/_DSC0100.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEim0hFIy1S7Qkb2OtL9WLecNIH71DfTXsbie_A7Y-5l4nlMMS9m9HYO3danSnqVqslhma7jm6qzVMn4AUPCFdHilvh1JPn3vhpRLgMuqWSeu2R93_8cm6AagyH1c2A8lyHLxqmAstmX2yk/s640/_DSC0100.jpg" width="428" /></a></div>

Every garden tour is different from the next. Each has its own personality due to the time of year, time of the day and the questions people ask. During last Saturday's tour, a benefit for the <a href="http://www.portlandreading.org/Donation.aspx">Portland Reading Foundation</a>, the main two questions were about the growing conditions and identification two plants, </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Musa basjoo and Calamagrostis brachytricha.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>'What did you do to those banana (Musa basjoo) trees?'</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I believe the Musa basjoo in my garden grow well due to moisture-retentive soil, good drainage and lack of winter winds. I started this stand 6 years ago from a 'pup' growing in my first Musa basjoo clump (2004). The 'pup' was approximately 24" tall when I planted it. The resulting stand receives protected Western exposure (from the street trees on the other side of the fence) and low to moderate summer water. Occasionally, I fertilize with a balanced organic fertilizer applied in the spring/early summer. I do not wrap the trunks, nor do I protect the root zone with cut foliage through the winter. This year is the second time the Musa basjoo have bloomed and produced fruit in my garden. After fruiting that trunk will die but many more 'pups' will emerge next spring. Some winters will freeze the trunks to the ground, others winters (like last) will allow the trunks survive- at varying heights.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I thoroughly enjoy gardening with bananas. I often imagine that I'm in a jungle, pruning saw in hand, slicing and chopping until the 'right' amount of light pierces through the dense foliage to reveal a forest of papery, green, yellow and pink trunks. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<b>What is that grass?</b></div>
Planted last year, Calamagrostis brachytricha catches the Autumn light beautifully. The grass in bloom is approximately 4' tall by 4' wide. I'm growing it in partial sun and it receives low to moderate summer water which I'll lessen next year. It has a medium green 1/2" or wider blade which appears lush all year. It has not run or seeded about in my garden YET but I imagine that it will in the future.<br />

NOW is Fall...the biggest and best that your garden will be...this year!</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
NOW is the best time to accurately see your garden for what it is.<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd9Y49qgABJJD22sHFmmJ9Bg7L7ubpaXwL_UWVHfofJGV4A9Q6DQx0nhwW3XFlM_kIk6S1ZL3p18h6nHAWjos_YUqFqx4Y04nPlPgxUq7veGLJpeemE87N9YvQ6QNBDR2wH7pr8U11xxM/s1600/_DSC0246.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd9Y49qgABJJD22sHFmmJ9Bg7L7ubpaXwL_UWVHfofJGV4A9Q6DQx0nhwW3XFlM_kIk6S1ZL3p18h6nHAWjos_YUqFqx4Y04nPlPgxUq7veGLJpeemE87N9YvQ6QNBDR2wH7pr8U11xxM/s400/_DSC0246.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Earlier in the season we can visualize our gardens but we really don't <i>know</i> what our designs will look like until Fall. Through the gardening season, I've watched plants grow and change. Now I can evaluate their form, their position in the garden, and accurately judge their worth in the garden. Is that Myrica 'Tarentina' hedge doing what I want it to do? ...even though I'm growing it on the edge of its happiest conditions (not enough sun). Do I like it? Does it deserve to stay? Is there another plant that could better take its place? I've started my lists of edits and replacements.<br />
<br />
Last year I planted the parking strip on the west side of my property. After one year of growth and abuse, it is clear to me what I'll allow to stay and what must go.<br />
<br />
<b>What can stay (for at least one more year):</b><br />
Carex tenuiculmus - I've had to trim it a bit<br />
Ajuga 'Black Scallop' - planted in shadier areas<br />
Stipa gigantea - the bloom will be sturdier next year<br />
Chionochloa rubra<br />
Arctostaphylos 'Sunset'<br />
Prostanthera cuneata - these are great in hot sun with some neglect but don't try them in partial sun or try to transplant them - ick!<br />
<div>
Muehlenbeckia astonii - wonderful, tough 'Corokia-like' plant.</div>
<div>
Choisya 'Aztec Pearl' - dogs and people broke off new branches but now they are thriving.</div>
<div>
Yucca 'Color Guard'</div>
<br />
<b>What must go</b><br />
<b>...and what<i> may</i> have to go:</b><br />
Ceanothus 'Centennial' - a leaf trap...<br />
Kniphofia caulescens - needs more water than I give it<br />
Stachys albotomentosa - needs more water than I give it<br />
Luzula 'Variegata' - the dogs really do a number on this one!<br />
Carex tenuissima - and this one!<br />
<br />
<br />
